Bigger Than…

August 3, 2009

bette

In a scene of For the Boys, starring Bette Midler, the couple is mentioned TWICE! Bette and her costar, James Cain, are beginning a comedy act in the 40s and starting to do shows on the war-front as Bob Hope is famous for. The producer tries to convince the two to stay a team after they had a fight and uses the same line that Cain uses later to convince Bette to stay with the developing act.

The line is as follows:
We’re gonna be bigger than Burns & Allen, bigger than Hope and Crosby.

The movie couple of Bette and Cain go on to form a comedy act much the calaber of the old radio comedy called The Bickersons.

But how could they be bigger than the LEGENDS?

Mad About You, the popular TV show from the 1990s, featured in one of its episodes everyone’s favorite funny couple. In the episode in which Paul is working on a film on the history of television and in which Jamie steals cable there is a scene in which Jamie keeps turning off the television as Paul keeps turning it back on. If you listen to what is playing you can hear Gracie say, “Sure call me Gracie. Everybody calls me Gracie.” …and then, “If we were really married they’d call me Mrs. Burns.”
